Resumen

Juan Bautista Sancho (Artà, Mallorca, 1772 or 1776 – San Antonio Mission, California, 1830) was one of the first to introduce California to popular eighteenth-century European religious music (Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony, opera and instrumental music with basso continuo). In 1803, Sancho travelled to Mexico from his native Mallorca and in 1804, settled down in the San Antonio Mission, where he remained until his death. Sancho was one of the writers of a peculiar Interrogatorio in which he reported on the living conditions of native Californians and set down the details of their social customs, native flora and music. He also compiled lexical material on California’s native languages. As a composer, his Misa en sol and la Misa de los Ángeles are his finest works. In addition to essays, useful transcriptions and a complete themed catalogue, this edition also includes a CD with a selection of musical recordings, such as Misa de los Ángeles and the Gloria in Misa en sol.
