This book contains essays in Spanish and English. The essays in this collection are distinctive in their critical approach to a wide variety of topics. Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile are represented by some of their major literary figures in poetry (Valencia, Mistral, Neruda, Torres Bodet) or prose fiction (Asturias, Gallegos, García Márquez). The four concluding studies on Von Humboldt, La Condamine, Gerstäcker and Zweig are valuable in that they present historical, political, sociological, geographical and/or scientific concerns in a cross-cultural context.
